AND IN WE GO! Into the Gestation Period (1983-1985), the Chuxx (it is tradition never to pluralize "Chuxx") most prolific period. Eight albums in all! Six of them traditional "studio" albums. One concept/"soundtrack" EP. And a "true" live album, not like that fake live album that started it all. With these three years and eight albums, the Chuxx pad their resume with 102 new tunes, 24 live tracks, four remakes and four cover tunes -- a total of 134 recorded tracks. A number which is (at this writing) more than half of the Chuxx total output as a band. It's hard to think of any band who has produced so much in only 36 months, much less in its entire existence. Now, this is by no means the Chuxx best material, but more so the creative coming-of-age of the band, where they finally move away from the nonsensical gibberish of their earlier lyrics to a more dignified form of nonsense. That is to say that the words actually make sense strung together, and tell little stories, whereas before it was just so many syllables filling up the spaces. During this time, it is interesting to note, Foz Gutterslime seamlessly transforms into Roi Llieu, much as a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. In similar fashion, Fenris "The Rhythmless" Scumrut drops all but the Fenris from his name, probably for reasons which parallel those of the newly christened Roi Llieu -- something I think to do with growing up and putting away childish things -- or maybe it's just for simplicity's sake. (NOTE: At the end of this period, Fenris and Roi Llieu will undergo one more transformation, as will Thos E. Roi Llieu will become simply Roillieu, Thos E. will become thos e, and, most dramatically, Fenris will become Schwa.) Name changes notwithstanding, it is during this period that the Chuxx move into more complicated songwriting, actually using time-tested compositional techniques like melody and harmony. The songs now are thought out much more beforehand. Some could even be called "crafted." Songs such as "Whistler's Mother," "Moonblind," "Hey Steve! I Like Your Cat," "Keep Your Nose Clean," "Choke The Mime" and "(Follow, Follow) The Drinking Gourd" each break new ground for the Chuxx. And let's not forget the high concept musical-adventure-comedy Cry, Pepita, Cry. While maybe not the Chuxx most successful endeavor, the album at least shows the Chuxx dumb enough to try to take the civil war in El Salvador and make a mockery of it through music. It is during this period that the Chuxx have possibly their most inspired moment: the single session that produced "Trouble at the Circus," "Theme of the Guys From France" and "Manhood Is a Soup," three of the most hilarious songs in the entire Chuxx oeuvre. That's right, I said oeuvre. What? You were expecting "canon" maybe? |
